Psychiatrist David Chen, MD, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, has an extensive background as a clinical research fellow with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). David Chen, MD, undertook a clinical research fellowship at the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health involving the analysis of genotyping data with a focus on pediatric and adult bipolar disorder phenotypes. A particular emphasis was on identifying likely risk markers and potential risk genes.

One vital aspect of Dr. Chen’s research involved working with Amish subjects on a field project centered on family-based human genetics. In addition to taking blood and skin samples, he provided community educational talks under sponsorship of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill’s Amish chapter. Dr. Chen’s research ultimately extended beyond the Amish community to encompass exome sequencing of NIMH Genetics Initiative collection sourced first-degree cousin pairs who experienced early-onset bipolar disorder.

Dr. Chen subsequently shifted his professional emphasis to general psychiatry. He currently maintains a private practice in Chevy Chase focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders, as well as comorbid medical issues. Further, psychiatrist David Chen, MD, is a faculty lecturer in advanced pediatric psychopharmacology with the Children’s National Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry, and he is active with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
